It was the sound of birdsong and the warmth of sunlight that roused Mark from the depths of unconsciousness.
He opened his eyes slowly and blinked hard a few times. He saw that he was still in the pool in the chamber and judged that it was morning due to a thin beam of sunlight emanating from the roof of the chamber.
Feeling physically weak and lethargic from a throbbing headache, Mark groaned and held his head in his hands.
He took a few deep breaths in an attempt to clear his head, but on the third breath he realised something; his breath was no longer laboured and ragged, as if his cracked ribs were fixed.
